buttercreami-cing asked: hi, sorry for this random question.. I've never been to a 'hack-day' type thing before, is it okay to go if you're not that amazing a programmer? I've never made an app before, but the hack day I want to go to is based on making apps in the area I'd like to build apps in.. Is it common for newbies to show up at these things or would it be kinda pointless?

YES. Of course it depends on the specifics of the hackathon or hack-day you’re attending but one of the things I’ve liked so much about the hackathons I’ve attended is the range of skill levels of the attendees.

I was a bit nervous before going to my first one but quickly realized that I wasn’t the only one who wasn’t an “expert” programmer. Everyone on a team can find a way that they can contribute to a project whether it’s programming, designing, wireframing (there are PLENTY of people who attend these things who don’t know how to program at all!), copywriting, or pitching. I definitely recommend going to one—they’re great for networking and learning new things!
